In Christ God offers our soul rest, peace from all that would rob it of peace. However it is not a position that once achieved, we remain in constantly. Our soul has a habit of wandering away from the rest God gives it, be it because of fear, anxiety, worry or something it pursues thinking that that thing or experience will give it greater rest.
The psalmist in Psalm 116 alludes to this wandering tendency of our soul, saying in verse 7:
7 Return to your rest, O my soul,
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
We must speak to our soul when it leaves its rest, tell it what the psalmist says here ” Return to your rest, O my soul”. We must recognise what caused our soul to leave God ‘s rest and turn away from whatever it is and get our soul back to the rest God gives it, where as the verse says, we experience God’s bountiful dealings with us.
Whenever our soul wanders….speak to it, saying “Return to your rest, O my soul”.
