Psalm 87 verse 2 says:
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Zion refers to Jerusalem and also to the area where the temple was built and is therefore also a reference to the temple in Jerusalem.
At the temple the people of Israel worshiped God, poured out their heart to Him and He met with them. At the temple God was intimate with His people, that’s why He loved the gates of Zion.
This reveals the heart of God and how He loves it when we worship Him, draw near to Him, are intimate with Him, He in turn drawing near to us, sharing of His heart with us and being intimate with us.
As James puts it, we draw near to God and He draws near to us (James 4:8).
Thus Zion speaks of intimacy with God. We were made for intimacy with God. When we are intimate with Him He is blessed and we are fully alive.
God loves the gates of Zion because there we’re intimate with Him.
