Psalm 74 verses 3 to 6 say this:
3 Lift up Your feet to the perpetual desolations.
The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary.
4 Your enemies roar in the midst of Your meeting place;
They set up their banners for signs.
5 They seem like men who lift up
Axes among the thick trees.
6 And now they break down its carved work, all at once,
With axes and hammers.
Verse 3 speaks of damage having taken place in the sanctuary. Our lives are a sanctuary, a dwelling place for God. We all have an element of damage in our lives, we have wounds that in some way our enemy Satan has brought about.
As the verses go on to so vividly describe, having damaged our sanctuary to some degree, his agenda is to damage it a whole lot more. He uses weapons that as verse 5 says, are like men who lift up axes among the trees, breaking down its carved work with axes and hammers.
The picture is one of great brute force, axes and hammers, coming against something that is delicate, intricate and fragile….carved work.
If we allow Satan and his lies to go unchecked in our lives this picture describes accurately what happens. In our soul, huge damage is done very fast because the truth is, our souls are delicate, fragile.
Don’t allow axes and hammers to break down your carved work.
