Psalm 71 verses 20-21 says of God:
20 You, who have shown me great and severe troubles,
Shall revive me again,
And bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
21 You shall increase my greatness,
And comfort me on every side.
These two verses describe a continual cycle through which God works in our life. First He allows “troubles”, hardships and difficulties of some sort. In our troubles He “revives” us and brings us “up again from the depths” of our troubles, giving us His strength in our weakness.
In that process we grow, grow in God’s character and so our “greatness” is increased and we experience God’s “comfort…on every side”. We meet, encounter God in all the different areas of our life where there is challenge and testing and we work through to a place of peace in each of them.
And so…..encountering God in troubles, makes us great.
