Yesterday we thought about the things we “trade” ourselves for, that don’t deliver in our lives as we think they will.
Ezekiel 29 verses 6 & 7 describe a similar idea, where Egypt was depended on by Israel but proved undependable. They say:
6 “Then all the inhabitants of Egypt
Shall know that I am the Lord,
Because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.
7 When they took hold of you with the hand,
You broke and tore all their shoulders;
When they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their backs quiver.”
Egypt were a staff of reed to Israel. In other words Israel leaned on Egypt as a source of strength and support and Egypt gave them as much support as a reed, which is weak and frail. Egypt failed them, let them down.
When we lean on things other than God they too are a staff of reed to us. We seek in them strength and support, but they fail us, let us down. They prove to be poor life sources, taking more from us than they give us.
Lean on God, all other supports are staffs of reed.
