The Psalmist says in Psalm 51 verses 17 & 18:
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise.
18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
We’re told in verse 17 that the sacrifice God wants from us is a broken spirit. God wants more than anything else, to break the influence of our spirit and all other spirits in our life, leaving us only under the influence of His Holy Spirit.
Verse 18 talks of Zion and Jerusalem. Zion was one of the high pieces of ground that Jerusalem was built on and was often used to mean Jerusalem. Jerusalem was where the temple was, where God met with His people and so they represent the dwelling place of God. Today they are a picture of the life of a believer because God dwells with us, in us.
Verse 18 speaks of God doing good to Zion, of Him building the walls of Jerusalem. Walls being built speaks of security and safety.
When we respond to God and allow Him to break our spirit and the influence of all other spirits in our life, He does us good and He builds our walls. We become more whole, healthy and secure.
A broken spirit….is the way to God’s good and His high walls.
