The words of Jeremiah chapter 4 verse 23 are reminiscent of the opening words of the creation account, in Genesis 1 verse 2:
Jeremiah 4:23 says:
23 I beheld the earth, and indeed it was without form, and void;
And the heavens, they had no light.
Genesis 2:1 says:
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
The great difference between the two verses is that there is hope and a remedy in Genesis for the formless earth and void, and for the darkness, the lack of light, where there is none in Jeremiah. In Genesis the Spirit of God was hovering over the deep, over the formless earth, the void and darkness and we know that through the Spirit creation took place, and what was formless took on form and what was void became full, full of beauty and splendour, and what was dark became light.
What God did to the formless, dark and void world, He wants to do to our lives. Bring order and structure to formless lives, fullness to void lives and light to dark, lost lives and He uses the same agent. His Spirit hovering over our lives, influencing and impacting them as we surrender our hearts to Him.
God’s Spirit was the craftsman of creation then and is the craftsman of our lives today.
