The medical world has for a long time recognised the link between the psychological part of us and our physical body. Hence the term “psychosomatic” referring to physical issues with a psychological origin.
Long before modern medicine the Bible made reference to this link.
Proverbs 17:22 says:
22 A merry heart does good, like medicine,[a]
But a broken spirit dries the bones.
There is no merrier a heart than one founded on God. Through His Spirit He gives us joy and through His Spirit He teaches us to live well and pursue righteousness and the off shoot of both those things is more joy, more to be happy and feel fulfilled about.
Living with such joy, we are told does us good is like medicine. Our psychological health brings us physical health, vitality, strength and energy.
Joy energises us as oppose to a broken spirit, sorrow and heaviness of heart, which we are told dries the bones. When something living such as a plant is dry, it is weak and unhealthy. Thus sorrow and heaviness of heart dry up our physical strength, they sap us of energy and strength.
In this Proverb, God the one who made and designed us points out the strong link between our psyche and physical bodies. He offers us psychological health for the well being of both.
Lets embrace that healthy psyche for the sake of mind and body.
