Proverbs 9:12 says:
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself,
And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”
This proverb is a reminder of our autonomy, personal accountability and responsibility.
If we are wise, we more than anyone benefits from that wisdom. Because that’s true for everyone, it follows that the person who most influences and steers one’s life is oneself, one’s own choices and decisions. Others may influence us to a degree, but the primary influencer is us, our choices.
From this Proverb we learn that this works both ways, good and bad.
If we chose to scoff and ignore advice and wisdom, we more than anyone bear and feel the pain and bitterness of that choice. Our choices can be the greatest source of our own pain and so when there is pain and heartache in our lives, we must ask ourselves whether our choices have played a part in causing it.
These facts are exciting and sobering. They empower us to influence our destiny for good and warn us that we can be the greatest source for our own pain.
Our choices are our destiny.
