Speaking of sinners Proverbs 1 verses 18 & 19 say:
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,
They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;
It takes away the life of its owners.
Verse 19 says that any one who owns something, acquires gain greedily i.e illegitimately, finds that it takes life away from them rather than giving life too them.
We might try to illegitimately gain something by stealing, cheating, manipulating, or using a position to gain power or recognition……whatever it is, when all is said and done we lose more than we gain.
We may get what we want, but we find the reality is it comes at a price, a price that is dearer than the price of what we gain. We lose at a deeper level than what we gain.
This is reminiscent of the words of Jesus in Mark 8:36 who said ” …what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul”.
When we acquire something illegitimately we do so at a price, the price of our soul. In the process we lose our soul, we give a piece of ourselves away, our integrity, our virtue, things that are far more valuable to us and integral to who we are, compared to anything we may gain.
In seeking what you want, don’t give yourself away.
