Job says in chapter 31 verses 26-28 of the book:
26 If I have observed the sun when it shines,
Or the moon moving in brightness,
27 So that my heart has been secretly enticed,
And my mouth has kissed my hand;
28 This also would be an iniquity deserving of judgment,
For I would have denied God who is above.
He said if he worshiped the sun or moon, his heart secretly enticed and drawn away from God by them, this would be iniquity, sinful and a denial of God.
At that time, worshiping the sun and moon was a common practice in that part of the world. We may not be able to relate to being tempted to worship the sun or moon, it’s not a common practice in our day and culture, however our society does not lack its idols. There are many things today our hearts can become wrapped up in such as money, material assets, success, prestige, position…the list goes on.
If our heart does get wrapped up in these things, it is enticed as Job describes in these verses and as he says it is a denial of God.
God should always have the worship and devotion of our heart. Whenever we give our heart to something else, we deny Him, act as if He isn’t there, He doesn’t exist in our lives. We deny Him what is rightfully His.
So verbally denying our faith is not the only way to deny God. Don’t lets allow our hearts to be enticed by any of the suns & moons of our day……don’t lets be part of what is an all too common denial of God.
