In Nehemiah chapter 2, as soon as Nehemiah came on the scene in Israel to do God’s work, to restore God’s order in Jerusalem he met opposition, cynicism, lies and false accusations in Sanballat and Tobiah (verses 10 & 19).
Nothing has changed. Whenever we seek to move in God’s direction in our life, when we go like Nehemiah to re-build something of God that has been neglected, is fallen down and in ruins, be it a value, a practice, a perspective, we meet opposition, cynicism and lies.
Progressing in God, is always an uphill battle, swimming upstream.
Nehemiah did three things in responding to his opposition. He said to them, verse 20:
“The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem.”
In saying ” The God of heaven Himself will prosper us”…..He looked to and trusted God.
In saying ” we His servants will arise and build”…..he did his part.
In saying to Sanballat and Tobiah ” you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem”….he excluded the enemy.
We must do the same. When the enemy attacks us in our pursuit of God, we must….
#1. Look to and trust God.
#2. Do our part, whatever it is God has told us to do, do it faithfully, obey Him and lastly…
#3. Exclude the enemy completely, don’t let so much as one word he says be part of our internal conversation.
It was Nehemiah’s three fold strategy against the enemy….it should be ours.
