Verses 2&3 of Psalm 33 describe praise and worship offered to God through music and song. The last phrase of verse 3 is:
“Play skillfully with a shout of joy”
…..this phrase describes two elements, one is something we work at and develop over time, playing skillfully. The other is more raw, spontaneous, shouting with joy which describes the heart of the matter, the motive behind the skillful playing, joy from the heart.
Everything we do for God should contain both these elements. Our work and effort to do what ever we do for Him well, skillfully, to the best of our ability. As Paul says ” Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain”( 1 Cor 15:58)
At the same time whatever we do it must be with joy from our heart. It must come from our heart, out of love and devotion to God, not some dutiful drudgery, or some effort to bring attention to ourselves and our own self importance. As Paul says again ” Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” (Col 3:23)
So whatever we do for God, in doing it we should love Him both with our head….in the effort, work we put into it and the skillfullness we develop……..and our heart…..with a shout of joy behind it, in our delight to do it for Him.
