Living out our lives for God is a combination of our effort and God’s power.
God calls us to do what He cannot do, simply because He has assigned that part to us, and then God does what we cannot do, because He is God and is ” able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think” ( Ephesians 3:20) .
We are given a picture of this partnership, in a detail we are told about Solomon building the temple. Speaking of the doors to the sanctuary of the temple, 1 Kings 6:35 says
35 Then he carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers on them, and overlaid them with gold applied evenly on the carved work.
Solomon carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on the doors. That was his doing. That speaks of our part in our partnership with God.
Solomon’s carvings were then overlaid with gold applied evenly to the carvings. In the New Testament a parallel is drawn between faith and gold ( 1 Peter 1 :7). The gold Solomon laid over his carvings speaks of God’s part, in our partnership with Him. Having done our part, we overlay all we do with gold, with faith which brings God, activates Him into the things we do for Him, our part in the partnership.
It’s as we overlay our actions with gold, as we exercise faith and trust in God to do His part, that our simply human activity, is touched and transformed into something divine and God’s purposes are accomplished through us.
To fulfill God’s will in our lives we must……carve and then overlay with gold.
