Proverbs 21:13 says:
13 Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor
Will also cry himself and not be heard.
So if we don’t meet the needs of the poor & needy, when we cry to God for our needs they wont be met. Why is that ?
Proverbs 22:2 tells us that God made the poor. Because He made them, they’re important to Him. If we want to be close to God we must embrace His values, what is important to Him must be important to us. We should value what He values, love what He loves, care about what He cares about and therefore care for the poor and needy, open our ear to their cry. If we don’t, we demonstrate that we are embracing values, priorities and perspectives that contrary to God. In doing that we are saying, “God I don’t want you or need you, I’m going to do life my way” and we distance ourselves from Him. That’s why He wont hear our cry, not because He doesn’t want to or is dis-interested in our cry, but because we have chosen to live far from Him.
When we ignore the needs of the poor and needy, God doesn’t hear our cry, not because He turns a deaf ear, but because we have turned a deaf ear to Him and His values, chosen a path far from Him.
How we position ourselves towards the needy determines our position before God.
