The story of Achan in Joshua 7, who took articles for himself that God had forbidden the people to take, is a sobering one. He acted in secret and because no one knew what he’d done he thought he’d get away with it. Because his sin was in private, unseen and in his mind “contained” he thought it would go unnoticed.
But the impact of his private sin, his secret was very visible and public. The army was defeated, the whole nation weakened. When it was identified that he had sinned he said that the articles he had stolen were hidden in the earth in the midst of his tent ( verse 21). They were well concealed, out of sight where no one could see them.
Are we doing what Achan did ? Do we have anything hidden in the earth in the midst of our tent ? Is there anything in our life that we keep secret, hidden from others that we know shouldn’t be there. We may think we get away with sin like that but the truth is we don’t. It hurts us and those around us.
We may keep it a secret because we don’t want to change or we may be too afraid, proud or just unsure of how to come out into the open and deal with it.
One way or another we need to bring it out into the light. Open up to someone we respect trust and feel safe with otherwise like Achan’s sin it’s going to hurt us and those around us.
Don’t have anything hidden in the earth in the midst of your tent.
