In Deuteronomy 4 verses 11-13 we are told of 3 things that happened through which the children of Israel heard God speak to them.
In verse 11 it says they came near. Verse 12 says they heard God’s voice. Verse 13 speaks of God writing down the ten commandments.
These 3 elements are still the 3 elements by which we generally hear God speak to day.
Number 1 we must come near. James 4:8 says ” Draw near to God and He will draw near to you”. Drawing near to God is both a practical and a heart issue. We must set aside time when we step out of the busyness of our lives to get alone with God, to quiet ourselves so we can hear Him speaking to us, hear His voice above the many other voices that bombard us. It is also an attitude of heart. We draw near to God by choosing an attitude of humility, surrender, faith, worship and obedience. These position us to hear His voice.
Secondly, verse 13 mentions the commandments God wrote. We need to read what God has written, His Word.
Thirdly as verse 12 talks about, we must hear God’s voice as we read it. Hearing God speak to us through His Word is more than just reading a book. We must grow in sensing scripture that God’s Spirit highlights to us and in understanding how He is speaking to us through it.
Hearing God speak to us through His Word is a dynamic living process, something we grow in, becoming more sensitive and accustomed to hearing and recognizing His voice.
