Psalm 72 is a psalm about Jesus the coming Messiah. In it Solomon the writer twice makes a connection between righteousness and peace. In verse 3 he says the mountains and hills will bring peace to the people by righteousness, and in verse 7 he talks of the righteous flourishing and there being an abundance of peace in the days of the Messiah.
These verses highlight the fact peace is a byproduct of righteousness. Some things God gives us directly, others indirectly via something else, peace being an example which comes to us as a result of righteousness:
Isaiah 32:17 ( NIV) says…
17 The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.
Why does righteousness produce peace ?
It gives us a clear conscience. When we walk in righteousness we know we’ve done our best and been true to ourselves, our true identity in Christ. Without that we are restless, robbed of peace.
Hebrews 10:38 says ” The righteous shall live by faith”. Righteousness demands a position of faith, of trusting God. Faith is both how we achieve righteousness and a fruit of righteousness. Faith produces peace. We can’t be trusting God and fretting, being anxious or fearful at the same time.
The more we walk in righteousness the more it will bear the fruit of peace in our lives.
