In Leviticus 3, a phrase is repeated, speaking of the sacrifices made to God, that they were ” a sweet aroma ” ( verses 5 & 16). What made them a sweet aroma to God ?
They were a sweet because they were “made by fire” ( verse 5, 11, 16). Fire purifies, removing all that’s unhealthy. As sacrifices made by fire they were completely destroyed, leaving no trace of their existence once they were burnt up.
When we offer ourselves to God in this way, it allows us to be a sweet aroma to Him. When we allow His Spirit to “burn” up all that’s unhealthy within us, and offer Him a life in which our old life is completely destroyed with no trace of its existence, it positions us to be a sweet aroma to Him.
The reason it is sweet is because it allows something else, someone else to express himself through us. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 2:15:
15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ
When we allow the complete destruction of our old life, and God’s Spirit to continually burn away all expressions of that old existence, then Christ can be express himself through us. Christ living through us is what makes us a sweet aroma to God.
